Looking for a content writer in Kansas City?

Doug Messel standing in front of a lake.
It’s me! Hi. I’m the writer. It’s me.

Look no further. Here comes your man.

I’m Doug Messel, a digital content marketer, occasional essayist, and fiction writer based in the suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri. When I’m not writing for my clients at one of the world’s leading performance marketing agencies, you can find me:

  • Hanging out with my family (my wife, my son, and my dog).
  • Advocating for remote workplaces (and competitive salaries) on LinkedIn.
  • Sharing photos of my family, office, and athleisure fits on Instagram.
  • Throwing around biting remarks on Threads.
  • Playing video games or watching professional wrestling in my basement home theater.

“the bats flew in the nite.”

I wrote my first short story when I was a kid. It was about bats..

What started out as a brief picture book with questionable illustrations turned into a lifelong love affair with the written word. One that I’ve channeled over the past thirty-plus years into a meaningful career that includes stints in content marketing, magazine journalism, fiction, and non-fiction.

I’ve always had a flair for the dramatic.

I grew up in the southern part of the Hoosier State just fifteen miles from Indiana’s first city. And while you’ve probably never heard of Edwardsport, Indiana, my upbringing there colors practically every part of my life. After graduating from high school in 2005, I attended the University of Evansville. While there, I pursued three different majors, took a victory lap, and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing.

With my BFA in hand, I followed my then-girlfriend-now-wife Erin all the way across the state to the Cincinnati area and then back west to the suburbs of Kansas City, where I’ve stayed for the past 13 years.

In that time I’ve gone from working part-time shifts (and subsequently managing stores) for some of the nation’s most popular fashion and accessory brands to writing marketing copy for insurance brokerages, self storage companies, pest control giants, financial firms, and some of the biggest SaaS companies in the world.

These days, when I’m not working on crafting data-driven, SEO-friendly marketing content for my clients, I’m probably:

  • entertaining a rambunctious kid.
  • avoiding my constantly growing “to read next” pile.
  • thinking about writing (or actually writing).
  • playing video games.
  • watching professional wrestling.
  • trying to convince my buddies to play tabletop roleplaying games like Vampire: the Masquerade or The ALIEN RPG.

Anyway, if you’ve made it this far, there’s a good chance that you’re interested in me as a content marketer, essayist, or fiction writer.

Or you like reading bios.

Anyway, if you’re curious about learning more you can always reach out via the form on the contact page. Or you can track me down on one of several social media platforms, like LinkedIn, Instagram, or Threads.

Let’s be pals! Colleagues, perhaps! Or maybe you could be my client and I would be your vendor!

The possibilities are endless.
